Explore Our Region

Winter

There is certainly no shortage of recreational activities to enjoy in the wintertime. Our region is home to NH’s largest ski area, Bretton Woods, as well as Cannon Mountain, a state-own ski resort located within Franconia Notch State Park.

Looking for excitement for the whole family? Check out the Bretton Woods Nordic Center’s tubing hill. They also offer a Kids Snowmobile Club as well as horse-drawn sleigh rides if you’re looking to experience a different kind of horsepower!

The Twin Mountain Snowmobile Club maintains over 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Learn more about snowmobiling trails, rentals, gear and more on our snowmobiling page.

Zealand Road is a popular option for visitors interested in snowshoeing and backcountry cross-country skiing as are the trails at The Rocks, offering ample space and unforgettable mountain views.

Spring

Springtime, often referred to by locals as mud season, might be considered the “hidden gem” season of our region. Bluebird skies make for incredible spring skiing and there are plenty of hiking trails with expansive views.

Once the days get a bit warmer and the ground starts to thaw, our maple trees begin flowing with their sweet sap which is used to produce pure NH maple syrup. The Rocks in Bethlehem offers the ultimate NH Maple Experience and many local farms try their hand at making pure maple syrup, too.

The Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge is a year-round residence for many creatures of the North Country, especially birds. Over 200 species call this sanctuary home and the birding during springtime is exceptional! Be on the watch for mallard, ring-necked duck, mourning dove and many more!

Summer

Clean mountain air and a warm, steady breeze make summer most pleasant in Twin Mountain-Bretton Woods. Visitors from all over the country (and world!) come to visit and we love getting to meet new faces.

Head out for a hike or bike along the trails and be immersed in greenery and wildlife. Cool off on a hot day with a trip to one of our area’s waterfalls, such as Arethusa Falls, NH’s tallest waterfall. Ripley Falls, Silver Cascade and Flume Cascade are some great options as well.

In early summer, rivers, lakes, and ponds are often stocked with trout and attract anglers of all ages and abilities. Enjoy fishing around the White Mountain National Forest or at one of the many bodies of water with roadside or backcountry access. Fishing licenses are required and are available online through the NH Fish and Game.

Our region also boasts five extraordinary Donald Ross golf courses – including that of the Omni Mount Washington Hotel. Golfers rave about the area’s scenic mountain beauty, lush fairways, and challenging terrain.

Fall

Leaf-peepers flock to Twin Mountain-Bretton Woods to experience the glorious transformation of nature. While foliage starts to peek through around the third week of September, by October, it is on full display! Enjoy the sights of leaves changing to their vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange.

Take a scenic drive along the Kancamagus Scenic Byway and see Mother Nature at work. The Kanc is a famous 100-mile loop which passes through the heart of the White Mountains, including Franconia Notch and Crawford Notch.

Experience the region from a whole new perspective with Vertical Ventures Aviation. Enjoy an exciting tour of the White Mountains in a Robinson R-44 helicopter.

Bring the family out for a hike or nature walk. Biking is another great option to be surrounded by the colorful hues.
